It took some time, but Matt Stafford heated up down the stretch. Shonn Greene has carried Iowa all season, and the Outback Bowl was no different. The Hawkeyes' back ran for yards and three touchdowns in Iowa's rout of South Carolina. Todd Reesing kept going to the well, and it kept coming up with water. Vanderbilt won a bowl game for the first time in exactly 53 years, with Bryant Hahnfeldt kicking a yard field goal for a win over Boston College in the Music City Bowl.

Depending on the point of view, it was either the ugliest game of the year or a defensive struggle. Houston got the better of Air Force in a rematch from earlier in the season, beating the Falcons in the Armed Forces Bowl. The win ended the Cougars' 8-game bowl winless streak. The Big East has already lost a number of high-profile coaches, which is exactly why it needs to show Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly some love.

Alabama returned to the national stage in Da'Rel Scott came off the bench midway through the 3rd quarter to rush for yards and two 4th-quarter touchdowns, lifting Maryland to a win over Nevada in the Humanitarian Bowl.

Four years ago, the stench of losing was attached to Penn State. But a special group of seniors cleansed the State College air for the Nittany Lions. Season-ending injuries usually aren't a good thing. But a knee injury signaled a better future for both quarterback Brian Johnson and Utah. The Missouri stars shined in overtime. It was a season of rallies for Rutgers. First, the Scarlet Knights rebounded from a start.

Then at the Papajohns. It was a familiar formula for Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl. The Bulldogs fell behind early, then came from behind for a win over Northern Illinois in Shreveport, La. Few finished the regular season playing as well as Jahvid Best.

He was at his best against Miami, but it was a late defensive play that pushed Cal past the Hurricanes in the Emerald Bowl. Florida State scored on the ground, it scored in the air -- even the defense contributed two TDs.

The end result was a dominating, win for the Seminoles and a forgettable day for Wisconsin. Both North Carolina and West Virginia made big plays and put up plenty of points.

But only one had Pat White. The gifts might be unwrapped, but the area under the bowl tree isn't bare.
